I completed my jury duty on Monday, thank dog. Although I did get pulled for questioning among 29 others, and we were all told the judge requires masks.

Of course there was one asshole going on about states rights, who did not grasp a courtroom judge is like an airline pilot. They don’t want you there, you are off the plane or in jail.

Monroe County, NY:

177 new cases reported for 5/24. Maybe we have finally peaked.

In the Boston area there was an earlier peak in April that was only followed by a temporary trough, probably because BA 2.12.1 came in. So I’m hesitant to really say we’re coming out of this one. But the wastewater counts are declining.

On 5/24 Mainland China reported 102 new domestic confirmed (39 previously asymptomatic), 418 new domestic asymptomatic cases, 0 new domestic suspect cases, & 0 new deaths.

At Guangdong Province 16 domestic confirmed & 2 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 58 active domestic confirmed & 26 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province. As the province does not break down recoveries by administrative divisions, I cannot track the count of active cases in administrative divisions, given the multiple simultaneous outbreaks. All areas of the province are now at Low Risk.

At Guangxi “Autonomous” Region there currently are 1 active domestic confirmed (at Hechi) & 21 active domestic asymptomatic cases (13 at Fangchenggang, 6 at Baise, & 2 at Chongzuo) remaining.

At Hunan Province 3 domestic confirmed & 1 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 3 active domestic confirmed cases in the province. As the province does not break down recoveries by administrative divisions, I cannot track the count of active cases in administrative divisions, given the multiple simultaneous outbreaks.

At Manzhouli in Hulun Buir, Inner Mongolia “Autonomous” Region, the last domestic confirmed case recovered.

Tianjin Municipality reported 7 new domestic confirmed (1 previously asymptomatic, all mild) & 11 new domestic asymptomatic cases, 14 of the new positive cases are traced close contacts under centralized quarantine & 2 via screening of residents under movement control. The city is no longer reporting recoveries, so I cannot track the count of active cases.

Shandong Province did not report any new domestic positive cases. 2 domestic confirmed & 7 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 4 active domestic confirmed cases & 18 active asymptomatic cases in the province. As not all of the administrative divisions in the province provide data on recoveries, I cannot track the count of active cases in all of the administrative divisions, given the multiple simultaneous outbreaks.
— Jinan did not report any new domestic positive cases. 2 domestic confirmed & 5 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 2 active domestic confirmed & 13 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city
— At Yantai 1 domestic asymptomatic case recovered. There currently are 2 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city.
— In the rest of the province 1 asymptomatic case recovered, at Heze.

At Taiyuan in Shanxi Province there currently is 1 active domestic asymptomatic cases remaining.

Shaanxi Province did not report any new domestic positive cases. There currently are 6 active confirmed (5 at Xi’an & 1 at Ankang) cases in the province.

At Hebei Province 4 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 2 active domestic confirmed & 27 active asymptomatic case in the province. As the province does not break down recoveries by administrative divisions, I cannot track the count of active cases in administrative divisions, given the multiple simultaneous outbreaks. All areas of the province are now at Low Risk.

Liaoning Province reported 11 new domestic confirmed cases. 20 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 5 active domestic confirmed & 194 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province. As the province does not break down recoveries by administrative divisions, I cannot track the count of active cases in administrative divisions, given the multiple simultaneous outbreaks.
— Yingkou did not report any new domestic positive cases. 4 sites are currently at Medium Risk.
— Dandong reported 11 new domestic asymptomatic cases, 1 person under centralized quarantine, 7 via screening of residents under movement control, & 3 via screening of persons deemed at risk of exposure. 8 sites are currently at Medium Risk.

At Heilongjiang Province the remaining asymptomatic cases recovered.

Jilin Province reported 2 new domestic confirmed (both mild) & 5 new domestic asymptomatic cases. 12 domestic confirmed & 8 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. As the province does not consistently break down recoveries by confirmed & asymptomatic cases or by jurisdictions, I can no longer track the count of active case counts in the different jurisdictions.
— Yanbian Prefecture reported 2 new domestic confirmed (1 each at Tumen & Wangqing County) case. The case at Tumen is a traced close contact under centralized quarantine, & the case at Wangqing County was found via community screening. 1 domestic confirmed case recovered. There currently are 2 domestic confirmed & 3 domestic asymptomatic cases in the city
— Baishan reported 3 new domestic asymptomatic cases, all at Changbai County, 2 traced close contacts under centralized quarantine & 1 via screening of residents under movement control. 1 domestic confirmed case recovered. There currently are 12 active domestic confirmed & 39 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city.
— Tonghua reported 2 new domestic asymptomatic cases, both at Ji’an, both traced close contacts under centralized quarantine. There currently are 4 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city.
— At Changbaishan there currently is 1 active domestic confirmed case remaining.
— At Changchun 10 domestic confirmed & 8 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered.

Beijing Municipality reported 41 new domestic confirmed (4 previously asymptomatic) & 6 new domestic asymptomatic cases. Of the 35 domestic positive cases (3 asymptomatic, 18 mild & 3 moderate) reported between 3 PM on 5/23 & 3 PM on 5/24, 32 are traced close contacts under centralized quarantine or residents under movement control, & 3 via community screening. As the city does not break down recoveries by imported vs. domestic cases, I cannot track the count of active domestic cases there. 9 sites are currently at High Risk. 23 sites are currently at Medium Risk.

Shanghai Municipality reported 44 new domestic confirmed (32 previously asymptomatic) & 343 new domestic asymptomatic cases, all of the new positive cases were already under quarantine. There was 0 new deaths. 268 domestic confirmed & 4,597 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 2,190 active domestic confirmed (134 serious & 34 critical) in the city. The city is no longer publishing the number of active asymptomatic cases. 4 sites are currently at Medium Risk.

At Hubei Province there currently are 9 active domestic asymptomatic (4 at Jingmen, 2 at Ezhou, & 1 each at Enshi Prefecture, Qianjiang & Suizhou) cases in the province.

Jiangsu Province reported 1 new domestic confirmed case, at Nanjing, found via screening of persons in high risk occupations. 34 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. The currently are 3 active domestic confirmed & 52 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province. As the province does not break down recoveries by administrative divisions, I cannot track the count of active cases in each administrative division, given the multiple simultaneous outbreaks.

At Anhui Province 9 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 33 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province.
— At Huangshan 9 domestic asymptomatic case recovered. There currently are 32 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city.
— In the rest of the province 1 domestic asymptomatic case recovered. There currently is 1 active domestic asymptomatic (Anqing) case remaining.

Zhejiang Province reported 5 new domestic asymptomatic (4 at Shaoxing & 1 at Hangzhou) cases. 1 of the cases at Shaoxing was found via community screening & the other 3 are traced close contacts under centralized quarantine. The case at Hangzhou came from elsewhere & under centralized quarantine since arrival. As the province does not break down recoveries by imported versus domestic cases, I cannot track the count of active domestic cases there.

Fujian Province did not report any new domestic positive cases. There currently are 1 active domestic confirmed & 4 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province. As the province does not break down recoveries by administrative divisions, I cannot track the count of active cases in administrative divisions, given the multiple simultaneous outbreaks.

At Guizhou Province 1 domestic confirmed & 1 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 2 active domestic asymptomatic (both at Qiannan Prefecture) cases remaining.

Jiangxi Province reported 1 new domestic asymptomatic case. 2 domestic confirmed & 2 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 42 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province. As the province does not break down recoveries by administrative divisions, I cannot track the count of active cases in administrative divisions, given the multiple simultaneous outbreaks.

Ürumqi in Xinjiang “Autonomous” Region reported 4 new domestic asymptomatic cases, all found via community screening.

On 5/24, Mainland China reported 15 new imported confirmed cases (1 previously asymptomatic), 55 imported asymptomatic cases, 1 imported suspect cases:

— Chengdu in Sichuan Province – 3 confirmed cases (1 previously asymptomatic), 1 each of the new confirmed cases coming from Hong Kong & Taiwan; 3 asymptomatic cases, 1 coming from Hong Kong & 2 from Canada
— Chongzuo in Guangxi “Autonomous” Region – 2 confirmed & 19 asymptomatic cases, all coming from Vietnam
— Qinzhou in Guangxi “Autonomous” Region – 3 asymptomatic cases, all coming from Vietnam
— Guangzhou in Guangdong Province – 1 confirmed case, from Malaysia; 3 asymptomatic cases, 2 coming from the US & 1 from Bangladesh

Overall in Mainland China, 374 confirmed cases recovered (10 imported), 4,808 asymptomatic cases were released from isolation (48 imported) & 40 were reclassified as confirmed cases (1 imported), & 24,169 individuals were released from quarantine. Currently, there are 3,699 active confirmed cases in the country (208 imported), 187 in serious/critical condition (all domestic), 25,948 active asymptomatic cases (435 imported), 1 suspect case (imported). 216,812 traced contacts are currently under centralized quarantine.

As of 5/24, 3,373.46M vaccine doses have been injected in Mainland China, an increase of 1.217M doses in the past 24 hrs.

On 5/25 Hong Kong reported 251 new positive cases, 28 imported & 223 domestic (76 via RT-PCR & 147 from rapid antigen tests), 2 deaths (1 unvaccinated).

On 5/25, Taiwan reported 89,392 new positive cases, 37 imported & 89,352 domestic (including 122 moderate & 69 serious). There were 76 new deaths (ages ranging from 30+ to 90+, actual dates of death between 5/16 – 5/23, 73 having a range of underlying conditions, 45 partially/fully vaccinated).

At the Austin airport waiting to board. Spouse and I wearing our N95s, and I am glad since the many unmasked folks around us are coughing a. lot. It is a/c season in Texas now so I expect our infection rates to soar over the summer. It’s the ventilation, stupid.

Also too, it is hard to be excited about the first vacation in 2 years when people so nearby need to use DNA testing to identify their children’s remains. Utterly gutted. Amanda Gorman said it best:
